Lipoproteins

A lipoprotein is a biochemical assembly whose primary function is to transport hydrophobic lipid (also known as fat) molecules in water, as in blood plasma or other extracellular fluids.

There are four major classes of circulating lipoproteins, each with its own characteristic protein and lipid composition. They are chylomicrons, very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL), low-density lipoproteins (LDL), and high-density lipoproteins (HDL).

Premature heart disease or a family history of premature heart. A familial history of high Lp(a). Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH). Recurrent heart disease despite optimal LDL-lowering.

Normal values for this test are less than 30 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL). In many instances, people will have no detectable levels of Lp(a) in their bloodstream. If your results are greater than the 30 mg/dL threshold, this may indicate increased risk of atherosclerosis, heart attack, or stroke.

LDL and HDL Cholesterol: "Bad" and "Good" Cholesterol. Cholesterol travels through the blood on proteins called “lipoproteins.” Two types of lipoproteins carry cholesterol throughout the body: LDL (low-density lipoprotein), sometimes called “bad” cholesterol, makes up most of your body's cholesterol.

To achieve Lp(a) reduction, one evidence-based approach is to initiate therapy with low-dose aspirin and extended-release niacin, titrated from 0.5 g up to 2 g over several weeks. Body cells extract cholesterol from the blood by means of tiny coated pits (receptors) on their surfaces; these receptors bind with the LDL particles (and their attached cholesterol) and draw them from the blood into the cell.

They are more complicated than glycolipids, forming large particles with several classes of lipid, and protein. The primary function of lipoproteins is the transportation and delivery of fatty acids, triacylglycerol, and cholesterol to and from target cells in many organs.

A high lipoprotein (a) level may mean you are at risk for heart disease. There are no specific treatments to lower lipoprotein (a). Your level of lipoprotein (a) is determined by your genes and is not affected by your lifestyle or by most medicines.

These lipoproteins play a key role in the absorption and transport of dietary lipids by the small intestine, in the transport of lipids from the liver to peripheral tissues, and the transport of lipids from peripheral tissues to the liver and intestine (reverse cholesterol transport).

The cholesterol in your blood comes from two sources: the foods you eat and your liver. Your liver makes all the cholesterol your body needs. Cholesterol and other fats are carried in your bloodstream as spherical particles called lipoproteins.
